Chief believes El Nino reduced copra and coffee production

The long dry spell associated with strong heat from the sun caused by El Nino, has drastically reduced copra and coffee production in North West and West Coast Santo.

“Over the last 2 and half months, 3 trader ships have called at North West and West Coast Santo to pick up copra and coffee. Unfortunately, one ship would pick up only 10 bags of copra or coffee, another ship would pick up 5 bags and the third would pickup only 4 bags of either copra or coffee.

“The reason is because the coconut trees and coffee as well are no longer yielding fruits due to the long dry spell along with the terrible heat from the sun brought by El Nino,” said Chief Tirsupe.

“Even primary and junior secondary schools in Nogugu and Wunpuko that are very far from the rivers are already experiencing water shortage.

“These areas in remote Santo have many rivers, however, they are now experiencing the effects of El Nino, especially for the schools that are located far away from the closest rivers or water sources.

“The people do not have problem with food at this stage but if the El Nino continues further for the next couple of months, sure enough it will have an impact on garden crops.

“But right now, it’s the copra and coffee that are severely affected and in turn making it difficult for the parents to meet school fees and other associated costs for their children attending primary and secondary schools.”

The Malvatumauri President conveyed this to Daily Post on his return from holiday in North West and West Coast Santo.
