Vanuatu Government has appointed local businessman, Andrew Leung as Consul General for Vanuatu in Hong Kong.
Mr Leung is a key player in the success of the largest chain of supermarkets in Port Vila, Au Bon Marche. The entrepreneur is also the main sponsor of Vanuatu’s football champion club, Amicale.
Vanuatu’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, External Trade and International Relations, Bruno Leingkon confirmed Mr Leung was recently appointed to the position of Consul General.
Mr Leingkon added that the appointment was made in the best interest of Vanuatu.
Vanuatu has a privately run Vanuatu Trade Commission in Hong Kong, which is also the authorized representative of the Vanuatu Financial Services Commission.
In 2012, Vanuatu launched its Vanuatu Permanent Residency programme in Hong Kong, which promotes residency to investors.
Dubbed as “one of Asia’s biggest power house”, Hong Kong has become a lucrative hot spot for Vanuatu’s CIIP programme.
Last year, Vanuatu launched its ‘Economic rehabilitation after Pam’ initiative in Hong Kong. Under the initiative, overseas applicants will have the opportunity to acquire ‘honorary citizenship’ in Vanuatu.
Port Vila seeks to raise $16.2m through the scheme, with 100 citizenships initially on offer at $162,000 each. Prospective citizens will also reportedly be required to pay a non-refundable fee of $40,500 before their applications are reviewed, with final approval to be granted by the Prime Minister and President following criminal and financial background checks.
These activities, among others, will now come under the watchful eye of Mr Leung, as he continues to facilitate trade and friendship between the people of Vanuatu and Hong Kong.
