A total of six candidates will contest the Malo/Aore constituency by-election in Vanuatu on 29th June.

Eligible candidates announced by the Electoral Commission include 3 independent candidates and one each from Nagriamel, People’s Progressive Party and the Graon mo Jastis Pati.

Former MP for Luganville constituency and former Speaker of Parliament, Andre George Wells is amongst the candidates.

Wells has in the past joined various political parties including the Vanua’aku Pati, National United Party, Peoples Progressive Party and now the Graon mo Jastis Pati.

Chairman of the Electoral Commission, Martin Tete said those applicants who were disqualified from contesting the by-election due to unsettled debts, were given 72 hours, as required by law, to settle their outstanding bills before they can be reconsidered.

The announcement of eligible candidates coincides with the commencement of the two weeks campaign period which will end on the eve of polling day.

The by-election is for the vacant seat of the late and former member for Malo/Aore constituency, Havo Moli.

Moli passed away in March following a long illness.

He passed away one month after he was elected First Deputy Speaker of Parliament. He was member of the Nagriamel Movement.
