“Vanuatu's Eastern part of Ambae Island and Aniwa Islands often suffer lack of water during long droughts and during natural disasters where water is not easily accessible or contaminated.

The installation of the solar powered desalination plant for the Lolowai Health Centre is now able to provide safe and sustained supply of water allowing delivery of improved quality of service" -said Christopher Simelum of Department of Energy and PEC Fund Coordinator for Vanuatu.

The people of Eastern Ambae of Penama Province in Vanuatu now enjoy a sustainable supply of safe water through an USD4million project supported by the Pacific Environment Fund (PEC Fund) that is coordinated by the Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat (PIFS).

The solar powered desalination plant supplies 100,000 litres of water per day for the Lolowai Health Centre and the people of Eastern Ambae who used to be heavy reliant on rainwater. The use of the solar system is also the latest innovation, eliminating the burden of costs of buying fuel and providing an environmentally friendly alternative for the residents.

Across the Pacific region, the benefits of the PEC Fund are quite significant.

More than 300,000 people across fourteen Pacific island countries are benefitting from increased access to solar power and safe water thanks to the Japanese Government’s PEC Fund contribution of US$66million that is being administered by the Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat.

The PEC Fund is financing innovative solutions to increase access to safe water and clean energy in the Pacific.
