Vanuatu Prime Minister Charlot Salwai and the UN Resident Coordinator Osnat Lubrani have today jointly signed the United Nations Pacific Strategy (UNPS) for 2018-2022.
“Vanuatu has taken concrete steps to ensure localisation of the SDGs through our National Sustainable Development Strategy for 2016-2030, Vanuatu 2030: The People’s Plan,” PM Salwai said.
“We are pleased to be signing together with other countries in the Pacific, and the lessons learnt from our Pacific Island neighbours the UN development assistance for the next five years and look forward to drawing support from the UN for the realisation SDGs and our sustainable development plan”, he added.
“The UN is excited to sign the UNPS today with the Government of Vanuatu”, stated Lubrani.
She added, “Consultations for the development of this strategy brought together key partners of government to discuss the way forward on the UN-Vanuatu partnership and in the implementation of the Vanuatu National Sustainable Development Plan and the 2030 Agenda.
UN agencies look forward to contribute jointly to advancing the country’s agenda for stable and sustainable development over the coming five years”, she added.
Consultations have not been limited to government stakeholders only. Extensive consultations were carried out to ensure views of specific groups, including youth and women, were captured in identifying gaps, challenges and priorities for the next five years.
Vanuatu is one of the 14 countries to sign the UNPS, following country-level consultations, and a final joint review and validation by the UN and Government counterparts.
The strategy will support Vanuatu, amongst other Pacific Countries and Territories, to achieve the SDGs, with a fundamental commitment to leave no one behind.
The UN Pacific Strategy responds to the national priorities of 14 Pacific Countries and Territories, focusing on six priority areas of work, where UN agencies are committed to working jointly to help countries achieve the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Areas include: Climate Change, Disaster Resilience, and Environmental Protection; Gender; Sustainable and Inclusive Economic Empowerment; Equitable Basic Services, focusing on Health, Education and Social Protection; Government and Community Engagement, and Human Rights.
The UN Resident Coordinator held a mission to Vanuatu this week specifically to sign the UNPS together with the Vanuatu Prime Minister demonstrating the UN’s commitment to the country for the next five years.
