The emergency authorities in Vanuatu are mobilising to reach the northern province of Torba which bore the brunt of the impact from Cyclone Donna.

Based on the latest reports, the Country Director for CARE in Vanuatu, Megan Chisholm, says it appears it is the small communities in the Torres Islands that have suffered the most.

According to Chisholm, assessment teams were flying out today to get on the ground.

“But the NDMO and the Red Cross have got some information, there is a doctor called the Flying Doctor who has reportedly done fly overs and those initial reports of damage are from the island of Torres has been very significant,” she told Pacific Beat.

“It is a population of about 200 households and an estimated about 100 houses are lost. That’s most of the houses. The food security cluster which coordinates the food security response is estimating that about 80% of the crops of manioc and yams have been lost which people rely on for food.”

Chisholm said the airports are now open so hopefully things will start moving quickly.
