What can three schoolgirls and two lambs be doing in the middle of Queenstown? Raising money to provide water pumps for Vanuatu, of course.

Three Alexandra students thought bringing two cute lambs to the middle of town would help them with the It's Not About Us fundraiser.

Parent Karin Kreher said they had brought sheep to a fundraiser previously and it was a big success.

"We realised that tourists and other people just love seeing little lambs and love to have the chance to pat them," she said.

In two hours Alani Lerew, 10, Claudia Hammond,11, and Hazel Bodeker,9, raised $222 and also made many smile in Queenstown on Thursday.

"You make people happy and you raise some funds for a really good project - that's just a perfect combination," Kreher said.

Five-week-old lambs Lollipop and Lavender proved very popular, even featuring in a few wedding photos.

Hammond said the lambs were behaving well, but Lollipop was "a bit fussy".

"They only go to certain people and get tired of patting sometimes," she said.

"But they are very good at posing for the camera," Bodeker added.

The pupils are planning to return to Queenstown with their lambs to raise money for a self-powered water pump for a Vanuatu village.
