Vanuatu’s Parliamentary Constitutional Review Committee (CRC) is scheduled to meet on Monday 18 July 2016 to discuss government’s proposal constitutional amendments.
Notice of the meeting was issued to all members yesterday 14 July by the CRC chairman and Minister for Lands, Ralph Regenvanu.
The notice advised members to collect their documents at the Parliamentary secretariat in good time before the meeting on Monday.
The proposed constitutional change is aimed at bringing about political stability and also to provide for women’s reserved seats in the national parliament, among others.
The Constitutional Review Committee is comprised of 19 MPs from both government and opposition side and eight members from the civil society groups like the Vanuatu Chamber of Commerce, Vanuatu Disabled Society, women’s group, churches, chiefs, youths, Vango and the union.
The CRC was established by Parliament following a push from the opposition, by boycotting parliament and demanding the people’s consultation prior to the enactment of the amendments by parliament.
The Parliament Special Sitting that was called by the government to amend the constitution had instead established this CRC for further consultation.
