Vanuatu will be joining other members of the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) to celebrate World Telecommunication & Information Society Day (WTISD) 2016 next week.

The theme for the day is "ICT entrepreneurship for social impact".

Pacific ICT Days 2016 will be hosted by the Office of the Government Chief Information Office (OGCIO) on 17th & 18th of May at the new National Convention Centre following the official inauguration of the new centre tomorrow.

Topics that will be covered in the two-day celebrations will include:

  • ICT entrepreneurs have a relevant role in ensuring economic growth in a sustainable and inclusive manner, especially in developing countries.
  • ICT entrepreneurs are involved in the development of innovative ICT-enabled solutions with a unique potential to make a long-lasting impact in global, regional and national economies
  • ICT entrepreneurs are drivers of innovative and practical solutions for catalyzing progress in achieving international sustainable development goals.

ICT Days will be the opportunity to reinforce relationships among all players of the ICT ecosystem, including public administrations, private sector companies, entrepreneurs, non-for profits, as well as all the people living in the Pacific.

Together, we will build a bright digital future for all whilst enhancing collaboration and celebrating the whole ICT sector.

The Vanuatu Government has endorsed a national IT policy in 2013 and the current coalition government of Prime Minister Charlot Salwai Tabimasmas is committed to it.

"Through our National ICT Policy, we have directed all our ministries to allocate a reasonable portion of their budgets to ICTs, as enablers of success. Our goal is to be a leader in ICTs in Melanesia and the Pacific, and we are well on our way to achieving this," the prime minister said.

According to Jackson Miake, Vanuatu Government Chief Information Officer, Vanuatu is now in a better position to roll out broadband connectivity to both rural and urban areas of Vanuatu with the high speed submarine cable connectivity.

Even the Chief Executive Officer of the Vanuatu’s Telecommunications and Radiocommunications Regulator (TRR) Dalsie Baniala foresees a bright future.

"The regulatory role has change dramatically and we have that validated here as we're heading in the right direction. We educate our children, we go to the children, we go to the schools, we get through to the community that lives the ICT value. ICT is the enabler for them to grow. ICT benefits moving onto health as well," she said in her ICT Day webpage.
