Forty-five teachers from Efate have undergone training to help them recognise the different types of disabilities and to assist in identifying students with disabilities.
The teachers are from the Ministry of Education’s Early Childhood Centres and Primary Schools in Ekipe, Epao, Matarisu, Takara, Manua and Malatia.
This is a new initiative, which the Ministry is working on this year to ensure it captures all essential student and teacher information to be stored in the Open Vanuatu Education Management Information System.
Open VEMIS is the Ministry’s decentralised data collection system that collects and stores information on all Government supported schools across Vanuatu.
The objective is to have the information on children with disability available to assist the Ministry of Education and Training (MoET) in its planning and support to inclusive education.
During the year, Ministry staff are being trained to cater for the different needs of children.
One of the teachers said “I have learned a lot from the training, especially in identifying children with disabilities. I have some children with disabilities in my class and this training has enhanced my knowledge about the different types of disabilities which I had never known before”.
The Ministry of Education and Training is proud to support inclusive education for all children in Vanuatu.
