Newly refurbished facilities have been opened at the Luganville Correctional Centre in Vanuatu.
New Zealand High Commissioner Johnathan Schwass joined the Director of Corrections Johnny Marango; Sanma Province President, Thomas Vora and Acting Secretary General Prosper Buletare for the opening ceremony.
The refurbishment includes the kitchens and dormitories in the low security part of the Luganville Correctional Centre.
New Zealand previously funded the construction of the high-security facility on the same site.
The current work is part of the final phase of the New Zealand-Vanuatu Correctional Services Programme, through which New Zealand has supported the development of Vanuatu’s prison infrastructure and correctional systems for the past 15 years.
New Zealand has been supporting department of correctional service for over 14 years now, through capacity building, technical advice and infrastructure development.
The capacity building is through in-house training, human resource development and extra budgetary support.
Technical advice is being provided in the areas of probation and custody through setting up and building an institutional relationship between Vanuatu and New Zealand corrections department.
